September 11, 2001: Timeline of Events

Monday September 11, 2006
World Trade Center, New York City On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked in the United States and turned into missiles destined for major American landmarks. Two hit the World Trade Center towers, defining symbols of the New York City skyline, and brought them crashing down. One hit the Pentagon, causing a portion of the historic landmark to collapse. One was probably destined for either the White House or the Capitol Building but evidence points to the passengers finding out about the terrorists' plans and attempting a take-over of the plane. They failed to assume control of their aircraft, but they succeeded in preventing the plane from reaching its destination and thus saved an unknown number of lives.

A great many people probably remember what they were doing that morning when they heard the news and what the day was like as new things kept happening and being reported in the news. Who else remembers trying — and repeatedly failing — to get updates from CNN until they changed to a low-bandwidth page so that the incredible traffic didn't overload their servers? Members of the Agnosticism / Atheism forum were kept each other informed and gave one another a shoulder to cry on.

An assassination attempt on Bush may have been a part of the 9/11 terrorist's plans

From Wikipedia"
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Bush was at the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort on Longboat Key, Florida.[20] He woke up around 6:00 AM and prepared for his morning jog.[21][22] A van occupied by men of Middle Eastern descent arrived at the Colony Beach Resort and claimed they had a "poolside" interview with the President. They did not have an appointment and were turned away.[23] It is possible this was an assassination attempt modeled on the one used on anti-Taliban fighter and Northern Alliance military leader Ahmed Massoud two days earlier. The previous April, Massoud addressed the European Parliament and warned of the possibility of al-Qaeda attacking in the West.[24][25] Longboat Key Fire Marshal Carroll Mooneyhan was reported to have overheard the conversation between the men and the Secret Service, but he later denied the report. The newspaper that reported this, the Longboat Observer, stands by its story.[26] Both Mooneyhan and the Observer reporter were questioned by the Secret Service, but the agency has not commented further.[26] Witnesses have recalled seeing 9/11 hijacker ringleader Mohamed Atta in the Longboat Key Holiday Inn a short distance from where Bush was staying as recently as September 7, the day Bush’s Sarasota appearance was publicly announced.[26][27]

Todd Beamer and Flight 93 Events. This is an account written on 9/16/'01 and has not changed over the years. ("Truthers" claim otherwise)

Sunday, September 16, 2001

By Jim McKinnon, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

"Are you guys ready? Let's roll!"

That's how Todd Beamer lived.

And that's how he died, helping to lead a takeover by passengers on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed Tuesday in Somerset County. It was the fourth plane to go down in last week's terrorist attacks.

Todd Beamer

Beamer, an Oracle Inc. executive from Hightstown, N.J., and others are being credited with foiling hijackers bent on crashing the Boeing 757 into what authorities say might have been a second target in Washington, D.C., possibly the Capitol or the White House.

Flight 93 had left Newark, N.J., at 8 a.m. Tuesday, bound for San Francisco.

"That's Todd," his wife, Lisa, said yesterday of the "Let's roll!" command, which he made over the plane's in-flight telephone. A GTE supervisor talked with him for about 13 minutes before the plane crashed.

"My boys even say that. When we're getting ready to go somewhere, we say, 'C'mon guys, let's roll.' My little one says, 'C'mon, Mom, let's roll.' That's something they picked up from Todd."

Beamer, 32, told the GTE supervisor, Lisa D. Jefferson, that he and others on the plane had decided they would not be pawns in the hijackers' suicidal plot.

Jefferson told him about the other hijackings and Beamer made her promise to call his wife and their two boys, David, 3, and Andrew, 1.

Beamer's call connected at 9:45 a.m. He told Jefferson there were three hijackers, armed with knives. He did not know their nationalities or their intentions.

One of the men had what appeared to be a bomb tied to his midsection with a red belt.

Beamer said he could account for 37 of the plane's 38 passengers. The hijackers had forced 27 of them into the first-class compartment near the front.

Beamer, nine other passengers and five flight attendants were ordered to sit on the floor in the rear of the plane.

He did not know the whereabouts of the pilot, copilot and the remaining passenger. He said a flight attendant had told him the pilot and copilot had been forced from the cockpit and may have been wounded.

Two of the hijackers were in the cockpit with the door locked behind them. The man with the bomb stayed in the back of the plane, near Beamer's group.

With him were others who placed cell-phone calls from the plane, Jeffery Glick, 31, a sales manager for a technology firm, Thomas Burnett Jr., 38, a California businessman, and Mark Bingham, 31, a former college rugby player from California. Beamer mentioned Glick by his first name in the call to Jefferson, Lisa Beamer said.

Toward the end of his conversation with Jefferson, Beamer said the plane appeared to have changed directions a few times. Later, it would be determined that it had flown west from Newark to near Cleveland, then turned back to the southeast toward Pittsburgh.

Beamer became anxious.

"Oh! We're going down!" he shouted at one point.

He paused, then said in a calmer voice, "No, we're OK. I think we're turning around."

Beamer then told Jefferson that he and the others had decided to "jump on" the hijacker wearing the bomb.

Jefferson could hear shouts and commotion and then Beamer asked her to pray with him. They recited the 23rd Psalm.

He got Jefferson to promise that she would call his family, then dropped the phone, leaving the line open.

That's when Jefferson heard what Lisa Beamer believes were her husband's last words: "Let's roll."

Then there was silence. Jefferson hung up at 10 a.m. EST, realizing that the plane had gone down. Officials said it crashed at 9:58 a.m.

Although it's not yet clear what Beamer, Glick and the others were able to do, they are being hailed as heroes for forcing the plane down in a remote strip mine area in Stoneycreek, Somerset County, about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"When the plane started to fly erratically, he said he knew he wouldn't make it out of there," said Lisa Beamer, who is expecting their third child in January.

Lisa Beamer said reports of her husband's heroic role had "made my life worth living again." Jefferson kept her promise and called Lisa Beamer at 8 p.m. Friday.

"It was the best thing that I could've gotten [Friday]. It totally changed the mood around here," Lisa Beamer said.

Jefferson, reached by telephone yesterday, declined comment. She said GTE's parent company, Verizon, may issue a statement tomorrow about Beamer's call.

Lisa Beamer said the call she received from Jefferson had lifted her family's spirits.

"We all knew what kind of person Todd was. We know he's in heaven. He was saved," Lisa Beamer said.

"Just knowing that when the crisis came up he maintained the same character we all knew, it's a testament to what real faith means.

"It's been a real uplift. It's put a spring in my step that I didn't have since Monday."

The couple met at Wheaton College near Chicago, hometown for both of them. After graduation and marriage, they moved to New Jersey and both took jobs at Oracle before starting a family.

"He's a great guy in a crisis. He would have had his family in the forefront of his thoughts. And he would not let other people overpower him," Lisa Beamer said.

Editorial note: Midknight Review is not into alternative accounts of 9/11. In no way do we support the notion that President Bush orchestrated the attack on the Towers. In fact, it is our position that people who take that point of view are supporting a traitorist agenda.

Having said that, there certainly may be some problematic issues in the reporting of 9/11 events.

It is our thinking that the single most important established event with regard to Flight 93 is the conversation Todd Beamer had with the 911 operator. His prayer with the operator and his statement to the others on the plane, "Let's roll" is an event that happened without question. In your reading of alternative accounts of Flight 93, never forget the Todd Beamer account. If the alternative accounting excludes Beamer's conversation with the 9.1.1 operator and his order, "Let's roll," it is a worthless consideration.

Again, Beamer's circumstance as discussed immediately above, happened as reported and without question. All legitimate explanations of Flight 93 must include this 9.1.1 event. In other words, Flight 93 could not have been shot down by an American fighter jet because Beamer would have never had the conversation with the emergency operator; he would not have been heard [by the emergency operator] to say, '. . . . . . .Let's roll.'

Sometime before 9:55 am on 9-11

Thank You, Mr. Mayor
We desperately needed a leader -- and Rudy (pictured, left) was there. Brave, focused, never far from the front lines, and clearly suffering with us, Rudy was one of the many reasons we were proud to be New Yorkers that week. Also pictured: President Bush, center; NYC Fire Commissioner Thomas Van Essen, right; Governor George Pataki, back left; and Senator Chuck Schumer, back right.

Still Standing
Portions of the towers' facades remained upright, creating the effect of a cathedral in the mist.

Heroes and Victims
Firefighters and rescue workers worked 24/7 to save lives in lower Manhattan. More than 300 firefighters -- in some cases, entire stations -- were killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center.
Smoke in the City
Eyes were on the downtown skyline all day Tuesday. The scene above was shot from New Jersey.
The South Tower Collapses
In a 2,000-degree inferno, the tower crumples and crashes to the ground at 9:55 am. Minutes later, at 10:29 am, the north tower collapses.

No Exit
As the heat from the inferno became intolerable, trapped workers were forced to jump from the towers to escape the flames.

Planes Strike the Twin Towers
On Tuesday, September 11, the two tallest buildings in New York — 110 stories each, a major tourist attraction, and crowded with men and women working for financial powerhouses, government agencies, restaurants, and shops — were destroyed.

Text of several trapped in the Towers, never to escape

9/11 (Pic:Getty)

They were the final desperate acts of the trapped workers as smoke engulfed the Twin Towers.

More than 1,000 phone calls were made in just 10 minutes after the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck. And thousands more kept calling as the horror unfolded, exactly eight years ago today.

Some reached loved ones, others left heart-rending messages.

Here in moving detail, are some of those last conversations.

9/11: Phone Calls from the Towers. More4, 9pm tonight.

Kevin Cosgrove

Dad-of-three Kevin, 45, was one of the few people still on the line to emergency services as the South Tower collapsed.

The Aon Corporation vice president’s frantic call ended abruptly with screams and the sound of debris falling on him.

KC: There’s smoke really bad.

911: Sit tight and we’ll get to you as soon as we can.

KC: I know you’ve got a lot in the building but we’re up on the top. Smoke rises too. Come on, I can barely breathe now – can’t see. It’s really bad, it’s black, it’s arid. We’re young men, not ready to die.

911: Hello?

KC: Hello... there’s three of us, two broken windows... Oh God! Oh...

(Rushing sound of collapsing building).

Shimmy

When the first plane hit, systems analyst Shimmy, 42, called wife Miriam.

He told her: “There’s been an explosion next door. Don’t worry. I’m OK.”

But before he could escape the second plane hit and he became stuck.

Friend Dovid tried to help him through his ordeal:

DOVID: Just hang in there. Just breathe slowly through a towel. You just have to stay calm. As a last resort, break the window just to get a little air in.

SHIMMY: (Talking to others) He says as a last resort we should break the window.

DOVID: If you’re running out of air do that.

Shimmy made several calls before being cut off at 9.59am, screaming “Oh God!”.

Stephen Mulderry

The 33-year-old equity trader left a loving message to mum Anne when people began falling from the windows above.

He told her: “Mom, my building’s been hit by a plane. And right now... I think I’m OK, I’m safe now but it’s smoky.

“I just want to say how much I love you (voice breaks a little) and I will call you when I’m safe. OK mom? Bye.” Stephen had first spoken to brother Peter after his tower was attacked – casually answering his phone “What’s up brother?”

He had tried to make it to the roof with six others but the doors were locked.

Stephen’s relatives tried to contact him before the tower fell. His mum was in a yoga class when he called.

Orio Palmer, Floor 78

Her fire chief Orio, 45, fixed a lift and took it to the 40th floor before traipsing up an incredible 38 flights of stairs with heavy kit.

In a radio conversation with colleagues, he reveals the chaos before him.

Crew: What floor should we try to get up to, Orio?

ORIO: I’m up to 55.

We’re going to have to hoof it. B stairway walls have been compromised on 73 and 74. The walls are breached so be careful. We’ve got two isolated pockets of fire. 78th floor, numerous 10-45 code ones (civilian fatalities).

Crew: Floor 78?

ORIO: 10-4. We need 2 engines.

Crew: We’re on our way.

His family took comfort in the relief victims would have felt seeing him.

Brad Fetchet, Floor 89

The stock trader, 24, was in the South Tower as the first plane hit.

Minutes before his own building was struck he called dad Frank, girlfriend Brooke and left this message for his mother Mary:

“Hey Mom. I’m sure you’ve heard a plane crashed into World Trade Center One. I’m obviously alive and well but obviously pretty scared.

Saw a guy fall out of probably the 91st storey all the way down. You’re welcome to give a call. Love you.”

Jim Gartenberg, Floor 86

The real estate broker had just accepted a promotion at another firm and was clearing his desk for the move.

He left a frantic message for wife Jill and daughter Nicole, two, as he became trapped. Jim, 35 – about to be a dad again – said: “There’s a fire. I love you, tell Nicole ‘I love you’. I don’t know if I’m going to be OK. I love you so much.”

Jill did finally manage to speak to him after hearing the message. She went on to have another daughter, Jamie.

As Jim waited for emergency services, he rang ABC News who aired his call live:

JG: I’m stuck right now.

ABC: Now are you above, Jim, or below?

JG: I have no idea, I have no idea where the plane hit.

ABC: There were two planes. One went into one tower, one the other. What do you see around you? Are you in smoke? Are you in fire?

JG: Debris is falling around us and part of the core of the building has been blown out.

ABC: How many other people are with you Jim?

JG: One other person... On the air I want to tell anybody who has a family member in the building that the situation is under control... Please all family members, take it easy.

Melissa Harrington Hughes, Floor 101

Melissa, 31, was only in New York for one day to oversee her software firm’s merger.

She made a tearful call home to husband Sean Hughes in San Francisco – but missed him as he was still in bed.

The message she left said: “I just wanted to let you know I love you and I’m stuck in this building in New York.

“There’s lots of smoke and I just wanted you to know I love you always.”

Minutes after the impact she called her dad Bob, who had to get her to calm down so he could understand her.

He hadn’t seen the news yet but when he turned on a bulletin while on the phone, the true extent of his daughter’s terrifying ordeal became clear.

Brian Nunez, Floor 104

Brian, 29, was struggling to breathe when he tried to ring brother Neal twice.

But Neal had just got home from a nightshift and was trying to sleep.

Office manager Brian’s message said: “A plane crashed into the Trade Center. It’s on fire, and I’m in it, and I can’t breathe. Tell everyone I love them, and if I don’t get out... goodbye.”

For the past eight years Neal has wondered how their chat might have gone.

Christopher Hanley, Floor 106

The Reuters news agency worker, 31, made one of the first 911 calls that morning from 80 floors above the crash.

Despite his desperation he still managed to be polite to the emergency operator.

CH: Hi, I’m on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center – we just heard an explosion.

911: 106th floor?

CH: Yes.

911: OK.

CH: We have smoke and it’s pretty bad. We can’t get down the stairs. We have about 100 people up here. I can see smoke coming up from outside the windows now.

911:: We’re on our way, sit tight.

CH:: I’ll do that. Alright. please hurry.

He was soon overcome by smoke and heat from the inferno.

For parents Joe and Marie, the recording brought comfort he kept his manners amid his ordeal.

We are told that 2993 died in the Towers. Most do not realize that an additional 1000+ individuals went missing, never to be found.
